London, October 17, 2002 - Royal Philips Electronics and MTV Networks Europe today announced that the Philips eXpanium MP3-CD player range is set to be promoted across Europe via a deal with MTV Networks Europe.
The Philips eXpanium portable MP3 players that can play regular audio and MP3 CDs will be featured across MTV Europe from 21 October. Keen to exploit MTV Europe’s unique connection with youth and its leadership position as the most widely distributed television network in Europe, Philips has joined with MTV Europe as part of its wider strategy to maximise its brand credibility by targeting the lucrative youth market. “Music is the pivotal part of the every day life of young people and this partnership offers Philips the chance to further strengthen our ties with this very important audience,” says Rob Verbruggen, Senior Marketing Manager, Marketing Communications for Philips Consumer Electronics Europe.
The deal, comprising integrated on-air and online promos made by MTV Europe to run across the MTV’s network of 10 brands in October, gives viewers the once-in-a-lifetime chance to win tickets to the ‘MTV Station X Dance Event’, a glittering VIP launch event and climax to the campaign, set to take place on 23 November at a secret location underground station in Berlin. Boasting 1200 handpicked VIP guests and cutting-edge performances by DJs including the world-famous Kevin Saunderson, MTV will use the footage of the event for a post-event broadcast across MTV Europe’s 107 million homes in December. It features up-to-the minute dancers and the funkiest guests, set against this stunning backdrop which, to date, has never been used for a public event. TrusttheDJ.com and mp3.com will also be creating dedicated downloads from the night to sit on a specially created Philips/ MTV microsite.
The deal marks the first through the line event that Philips Consumer Electronics Europe and MTV Europe have partnered on, although both brands have worked together in previous years on advertising campaigns.
“This Philips eXpanium MP3 deal offers the perfect synergy between the two brands," commented Tony Robinson, Account Director, European Marketing Partnerships, MTV Networks Europe. "MTV Europe is renowned for its music leadership whilst the Philips eXpanium MP3 range takes music accessibility to a new level. The upcoming Philips eXpanium MP3 campaign on MTV Networks Europe will ensure that the eXpanium will be marketed to a finely-tuned pan-European youth audience whilst allowing Philips the opportunity to take advantage of MTV Europe’s in house TV and event expertise.”
