Donation of metal detectors, conversion to all-jet schedule demonstrate airline’s commitment to Green Bay area travelers

GREEN BAY, WIS. – (June 3, 2003) – Northwest Airlines today announced that it has donated two of its airport metal detectors, known in the airline industry as magnetometers, to the Brown County, Wis. Sheriff’s Department.

Northwest formally presented the equipment to Brown County officials at a ribbon-cutting event in the rotunda of the Brown County Courthouse in Green Bay today.

“We are pleased to give something back to a community that has given so much to us over the years,” said Tim Griffin, executive vice president of marketing and distribution for Northwest, at today’s ceremony. “Northwest’s commitment to serving the needs of travelers in Green Bay, and seven other cities throughout the state of Wisconsin, goes back many years. We look forward to continue offering air service that meets the growing travel needs of the Green Bay area.”

The security equipment was accepted by Brown County Sheriff Dennis Kocken. "The Brown County Sheriff's Department appreciates all of the support that Northwest Airlines is providing to the county, in aiding in our efforts to keep safety and security paramount in our courthouse. The added resource will be a valuable asset to our well-trained staff. A great deal of gratitude goes out to the people at Northwest Airlines for providing this resource."

The magnetometers will be used by Brown County law enforcement to address the potential of weapons being brought into courtrooms. The magnetometers are mobile, which will enable security staff to place the units in front of individual courtrooms for high profile cases, or where the judges deem it necessary.

U.S. airport security checkpoints consist of x-ray machines that inspect carry-on luggage and other items, and magnetometers that detect metal on passengers. Until April 2002, when the U.S. Transportation Security Agency (TSA) began assuming responsibility for airport security checkpoints, airlines were responsible for purchasing and maintaining security equipment. As the carrier that boards more travelers in Green Bay than any other airline, Northwest owned the security checkpoint equipment at Austin Straubel International Airport. When the TSA assumed responsibility for checkpoint security at Austin Straubel in September of 2002, they ordered new equipment. The new equipment arrived in March of 2003, making it possible for Northwest to donate the existing equipment to Brown County.

NORTHWEST IS NUMBER ONE CARRIER IN GREEN BAY

Northwest is Green Bay’s largest airline, with an all-jet schedule of 12 daily flights to the airline’s convenient hubs in Detroit and Minneapolis/St. Paul from Green Bay’s Austin Straubel International Airport. From Green Bay, Northwest and Northwest Airlink operate five nonstop jets to Detroit and seven nonstop flights to Minneapolis/St. Paul. Northwest’s Green Bay team consists of a total of 40 locally based employees.

Northwest is the only airline that offers Green Bay travelers larger “mainline” jet service, such as aboard the airline’s DC-9 fleet.

NORTHWEST SERVES MORE OF WISCONSIN

Northwest is the number one carrier in the state of Wisconsin, serving a total of eight cities – Appleton, Eau Claire, Green Bay, LaCrosse, Madison, Milwaukee, Rhinelander, and Wausau – along with its Northwest Airlink partners. Northwest is the number one airline in six of those cities and is the only airline to offer larger “mainline” jet aircraft service to three Wisconsin airports.

Northwest’s Green Bay service is available for sale via the Internet at www.nwa.com, by calling Northwest Airlines Reservations at 1-800-225-2525, or through travel agencies.

Northwest Airlines is the world's fourth largest airline with hubs at Detroit, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Memphis, Tokyo and Amsterdam, and approximately 1,500 daily departures. With its travel partners, Northwest serves nearly 750 cities in almost 120 countries on six continents. In 2002, consumers from throughout the world recognized Northwest’s efforts to make travel easier. A 2002 J.D. Power and Associates study ranked airports at Detroit and Minneapolis/St. Paul, home to Northwest’s two largest hubs, tied for second place among large domestic airports in overall customer satisfaction. Business travelers who subscribe to OAG print and electronic flight guides rated nwa.com as the best airline Web site in 2002. Readers of TTG Asia and TTG China named Northwest “Best North American airline.”
